At 18,188 built — 8,685 of them rolling off Ford's Willow Run line — the Liberator is the most-produced bomber in history. Its long Davis wing gave it the reach to close the mid-Atlantic gap, and Liberators were credited in sinking 93 U-boats. Today the flying population is down to almost nothing, which makes this one of the rarest engine sounds on Earth.

Fun fact

18,188 B-24s were built — more than any other bomber in history — yet today you could count the flying ones on one hand.

How to spot one

Twin oval tail fins, a long shoulder-mounted wing, and a deep slab-sided fuselage. If it looks like a flying boxcar with two tails, it's a Liberator.

One might be overhead right now.
