Named for air power pioneer Billy Mitchell, the B-25 made history in April 1942 when sixteen of them launched from the carrier USS Hornet for the Doolittle Raid — something a medium bomber was never designed to do. Nearly 10,000 were built, and dozens still fly, making it the most catchable of the great American WWII bombers.

Fun fact

All sixteen Doolittle Raid B-25s launched from the carrier USS Hornet in April 1942 — a takeoff a land-based medium bomber was never designed to make.

How to spot one

Twin tail fins, two big radials, tricycle gear, and a gull-wing kink where the wing meets the engines. You'll usually hear it before you see it.

Crews call it
The Mitchell
Sounds like
Two Wright Twin Cyclones — a snarling, crackling pair of radials, famously one of the loudest sounds at any airshow

One might be overhead right now.

Bogey turns the The Doolittle Raider from a dot in the sky into a card in your logbook.
