The Invader
“The only American bomber to fight in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.”
Douglas · military
The A-26 Invader arrived in 1944 as the fastest American bomber of the war, a twin-engine attack aircraft with up to 14 forward-firing guns and a crew of three. It was renamed B-26 in 1948, which is why its type code borrows the Marauder's name. It fought in Korea, and rebuilt B-26K Counter Invaders flew night interdiction over the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam. Afterwards many became fire bombers and executive conversions. About 20 remain airworthy.
The Invader was the last American piston bomber to see combat: B-26K Counter Invaders flew missions in Southeast Asia until 1969.
A slim twin with the engines set well forward of the wing, a tall single fin, and a glazed or solid gun nose. Tricycle gear, which few WWII bombers had.
