Built
4 (converted 747-400s)
The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter is a 747-400 with a massively swollen fuselage, built to haul 787 Dreamliner sections between factories in Japan, Italy, and the United States. The entire tail swings open sideways to load cargo. Only four exist — all converted from passenger 747s — and Atlas Air flies them on Boeing's behalf.
Fun fact
In 2013 a Dreamlifter landed at the wrong Kansas airport by mistake — a small field with a runway barely long enough to get back out. It made it.
How to spot one
A 747 that looks inflated. The cargo hold is three times the volume of a 747 freighter, and the hinged swing-tail is the giveaway on the ground. Only four in the world — catching one is a genuine event.
