The C-17 Globemaster III can land on short, austere runways and deliver tanks, helicopters, or humanitarian supplies to the most remote corners of the planet. It's the backbone of US military airlift.
Fun fact
A C-17 can carry an M1 Abrams tank (68 tons) and land on a 3,500-foot dirt runway. Commercial jets need 8,000+ feet of paved runway.
How to spot one
T-tail, four engines, enormous rear cargo door. Shorter and wider than a C-5. Can land on dirt strips.
Crews call it
The Moose
Sounds like
Four F117 turbofans (military 757 engines) with thrust reversers — LOUD, especially in short-field mode
One might be overhead right now.
