In the 1960s, McKinnon Enterprises of Sandy, Oregon took war-surplus Grumman Geese and rebuilt them around PT6 turboprops — stretched noses, more fuel, retractable floats, nearly double the speed of the radials they replaced. Only a handful of conversions were ever finished, and the final G-21G model carried 680 horsepower a side in an airframe designed before World War II.

Fun fact

The registry lists just one turbine Goose still active. If one of these crosses your map, you are looking at the rarest kind of catch there is.

How to spot one

Looks like a Goose that hit the gym: long pointed turbine nacelles with exhaust stacks instead of round radial cowls. If the hull says 1937 but the engines whine, you've found the turbine.

Sounds like
PT6 turbine whine where a radial rumble should be — a Goose that sounds like a King Air

One might be overhead right now.
