The Spitfire got the glory, but Hurricanes shot down more enemy aircraft in the Battle of Britain than every other British defence combined. It was slower and older than the Spitfire, built with a steel tube frame and fabric covering, and that made it easy to repair and a steady gun platform. Over 14,000 were built in Britain and Canada. A dozen fly today, several in the hands of the same collections that keep Spitfires in the air.

Fun fact

The Hurricane's rear fuselage was covered in doped fabric, which meant cannon shells could pass straight through it without exploding.

How to spot one

A thick wing, a humped back behind the cockpit, and a tailwheel. If it looks like a Spitfire but chunkier, with a straight-edged wing instead of the ellipse, it is a Hurricane.

The Hurri
Sounds like
A Merlin, the same howl as a Spitfire, from a thicker and more humped airframe

One might be overhead right now.
