The Virus SW 121's long, slippery composite wing (12.1 meters, tip to tip) gives it a glide ratio closer to a sailplane's than a typical touring plane — a Rotax engine sips fuel while the airframe does the work of staying efficient at speed. Pipistrel built it as an efficiency and touring platform, and the same airframe later became the basis for the all-electric Velis Electro trainer.
Swap the Rotax for a battery pack and electric motor, and this airframe becomes the Pipistrel Velis Electro — the first electric aircraft the FAA ever certified.
