The RC-12 Guardrail was the US Army's signals intelligence workhorse — a King Air bristling with so many antennas it barely looked like a King Air. It collected and located radio signals and streamed them to analysts on the ground in near real time. After five decades of Guardrail service, the Army retired the fleet in December 2025 — so catching one now means catching a survivor.
Fun fact
Guardrail and its Army ISR stablemates flew more than 120,000 hours across 30,000-plus sorties in five decades of service.
How to spot one
A King Air silhouette interrupted everywhere: blade aerials on the spine and belly, wingtip pods, dipoles under the wings. Gray, with US Army titles.
Sounds like
The steady PT6 turboprop drone of every King Air — dragged slightly out of tune by a fuselage full of antennas
