The SIAI-Marchetti S.211 is a small Italian jet trainer with a big canopy and gentle manners. Only about 60 were built, and Singapore and the Philippines trained generations of pilots on them. When Singapore retired its fleet, most of the jets found new lives with civilian owners — which is why a 1980s military trainer keeps showing up on the radar.

Fun fact

Around 15 ex-Singapore S.211s now fly on the Australian civil register alone — roughly a quarter of every S.211 ever built, in private hands.

How to spot one

A tiny shoulder-wing jet with a one-piece bubble canopy over two tandem seats. In the US and Australia expect bright civilian paint; the Philippine Air Force still flies a few in gray.

Sounds like
A polite JT15D turbofan — the same engine family as small business jets. More whisper than roar

One might be overhead right now.
