North American F-100 Super Sabre
The Hun
“The first fighter to go supersonic in level flight.”
North American Aviation · military
The F-100 followed the F-86 Sabre and was the first of the Century Series, the first US Air Force fighter that could break the sound barrier straight and level. It flew more sorties in Vietnam than any other type and carried the Thunderbirds for 13 seasons. The two-seat F-100F is the version that survives in the air, flown at airshows by a very small number of operators.
F-100s flew over 360,000 combat sorties in Vietnam, more than the 15,000 P-51 Mustangs managed in the whole of the Second World War.
A huge oval nose intake with a swept wing set low, and a tail that starts well forward of the exhaust. The F-100F has a long two-seat canopy. Big, loud, and rare.
