The story
Boeing stretched the 727-100 by 20 feet, with a 10-foot plug ahead of the wing and another behind it, and the 727-200 first flew in July 1967. Northeast Airlines took the first one that December. The later 727-200 Advanced added more fuel, weight and power, and the -200 became the most-built 727, with 1,260 delivered. Iran Aseman Airlines flew the last scheduled 727 passenger flight in January 2019; the few left today fly freight, charter and government missions.
With no engines hanging under its wing, Boeing could fill almost the whole leading edge with slats and Krueger flaps and add triple-slotted flaps behind. That let the 727 use shorter runways than most early jets, which is how it reached smaller cities' airports.
