The story
Boeing stretched the 757-200 by 23 feet to make the -300, launched by the German leisure airline Condor in 1996 and flying passengers from March 1999. At 178 feet it is the longest single-aisle twinjet ever built, with room for about 50 more passengers than the -200. Only 55 were made, and most of the ones still flying wear United or Delta colors.
The 757-300 is long enough that Boeing gave it a retractable tailskid under the rear fuselage to protect against tailstrikes.
