The story
The Spitfire got the glory, but Hurricanes inflicted 60% of the Luftwaffe's losses in the Battle of Britain. It was slower and older than the Spitfire, built around a steel-tube frame covered in wood and fabric, which made it easy to repair and a steady gun platform. Over 14,000 were built in Britain and Canada, and about 16 are airworthy today.
The Hurricane's rear fuselage was covered in wood and doped fabric, so cannon shells could pass straight through it without exploding.
