The story
The MD-80 was a workhorse for American and Delta for decades and flew for airlines all over the world. Those tail-mounted engines made the back rows loud, but the long, slim five-abreast cabin could carry up to 172 people. Nearly all have retired now, and the few still flying are with smaller carriers.
The MD-80's nickname 'Mad Dog' comes from its abbreviation MD — but the loud engines certainly fit the name.
