The story
Airbus stretched the A340 by more than 38 feet, fitted four Rolls-Royce Trent 556s and launched the -600 with Virgin Atlantic in 2002. At 247 feet it was the longest passenger airliner in the world until the Boeing 747-8 arrived. Only 97 were delivered. Lufthansa, once its largest operator, flew its last -600 passenger service in October 2026.
To free up cabin space, the -600 could put crew rests, galleys and lavatories on the lower deck. Lufthansa's had a staircase down to a row of restrooms below the cabin.
