Widebody jets
Widebodies are the big long-haul jets with two aisles inside. From the ground they look noticeably fatter and longer than a 737 or A320, and many of them are flying between continents.
Engine count and a few details tell almost all of them apart.
How to tell them apart
Four engines
A 747, A380 or A340. A hump at the front: 747. Two full decks: A380.
Zig-zag 'shark tooth' edges on the back of the engines
A 787 or a 747-8.
A black 'mask' around the cockpit windows
An A350.
Huge engines and long wingtips swept back without winglets
Often a 777-300ER or a 787.
