The story
The 747-400 brought the jumbo into the glass-cockpit era: two pilots instead of three, six-foot winglets and the stretched upper deck. Boeing delivered 694 between 1989 and 2009, more than any other 747 version. Most airlines have retired their passenger -400s, but the freighters still haul cargo for operators like Atlas Air, Kalitta and Cargolux.
A 747-400F can lift about 124 tonnes of cargo, loaded straight in through a nose that swings up.
