The story
Sukhoi Civil Aircraft began the Superjet in 2000 as the first all-new commercial aircraft of post-Soviet Russia. It first flew in May 2008 and entered service with Armenia's Armavia in April 2011. The 87-to-108-seat jet uses SaM146 engines from PowerJet, a joint venture of France's Safran and Russia's NPO Saturn. Since August 2023 it has been sold as the Yakovlev SJ-100, and Yakovlev is developing a version with Russian-made systems and PD-8 engines to replace the Western parts. Most fly with Russian airlines.
Optional 'sabrelet' wingtip extensions become standard on the Russified SJ-100, stretching the span from about 28 m to 29.7 m.
