Air Astana
Air Astana brought Western airline standards to Central Asia. It was founded in 2001 as a joint venture between Kazakhstan's government and BAE Systems, and built a reputation for service well above its size.
Air Astana is named after Kazakhstan's capital, and Astana simply means 'capital city' in Kazakh. Fittingly, the airline's first scheduled flight in May 2002 went from Almaty to Astana.
