The story
The 737-300 first flew in February 1984 with CFM56 high-bypass engines, starting the 737 Classic family. USAir and Southwest launched it, and Southwest flew its -300s for 33 years before retiring the last on 29 September 2017. Boeing built 1,113, the most of any Classic variant.
The 737 sits so close to the ground that Boeing moved the CFM56's accessory gearbox from the bottom of the engine to the side. That is where the flat-bottomed 'hamster pouch' nacelle comes from.
