Buster and gate

Brevity codes have two words for “faster.” Buster is “fly at maximum continuous speed”: as fast as the engines can keep going. Gate is the next step: “fly as quickly as possible, using after-burner or maximum power.” Gate burns fuel fast, which brings bingo closer.

Why the radio needs it

Brevity words exist so one word does the job of a sentence. A controller who needs a fighter somewhere quickly says “buster” and the pilot knows exactly what’s asked.
