Types of military helicopters
If two helicopters just thundered over your house in formation, they were very likely military. Crews train between bases and ranges all the time, often low and in pairs.
The good news: military helicopters are some of the easiest aircraft to tell apart once you know what to look for.
How to tell them apart
Two big rotors, one at each end
A CH-47 Chinook. Nothing else you're likely to see looks like it.
Four-blade rotor, long tail and a boxy cabin
A UH-60 Black Hawk (or a Navy Seahawk).
Thin body, two seats one behind the other, stub wings
An attack helicopter: the AH-64 Apache has a sensor turret under the nose.
Two giant propellers on the wingtips
Not a helicopter at all: the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor.
