Military cargo planes
Big gray propeller planes and jets that fly low over the same route day after day are often military transports practicing approaches, airdrops or formation flying.
They carry troops, vehicles and supplies, and they fly a lot, so they're some of the military aircraft you're most likely to see.
How to tell them apart
Four propellers
A C-130 Hercules. The newer C-130J has six-blade propellers.
Four jet engines, a T-tail and a high wing
A C-17 Globemaster III.
Like a C-17, but noticeably bigger and fatter
A C-5 Galaxy, one of the largest planes flying.
Two propellers mounted high on the wing
A smaller tactical transport, like the C-27J Spartan or the Airbus C295.
Propellers that tilt up like a helicopter
The V-22 Osprey.
