The story

Vertol flew its Model 107 tandem-rotor prototype on 22 April 1958, and the Marines and Navy took it into service as the H-46 Sea Knight in 1964. It carried Marines from Vietnam to Iraq. The Navy retired its H-46s in 2004, and the Marines said farewell in August 2015, handing the job to the MV-22 Osprey. The code also covers Kawasaki's licence-built KV-107, Canada's CH-113 Labrador and Sweden's Hkp 4, all retired from military service. Civil Model 107-IIs still lift loads and fight fires: Columbia Helicopters holds the type certificate and sold aircraft to operators in Switzerland and South Korea in 2023.

Fun fact

On 30 April 1975 the last helicopter to lift off the roof of the US Embassy in Saigon was a Marine CH-46 from squadron HMM-164, carrying the last Marine guards out.
