The story
Hindustan Aeronautics started the Advanced Light Helicopter program in 1979 and brought in Germany's MBB as design consultant in 1984. The prototype first flew in Bangalore on 20 August 1992. Sanctions after India's 1998 nuclear tests embargoed the LHTEC T800 engine it was meant to use, so it flew on Turbomeca TM333s, and deliveries began in 2002. More than 400 have been built. India's Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard all fly it, in versions from troop carrier and search-and-rescue helicopter to the armed Rudra, and a civil Dhruv NG first flew at the end of 2025.
The Indian Air Force display team Sarang flies Dhruvs painted as peacocks: sarang is Sanskrit for peacock. The team formed in 2003 and was still performing at the Singapore Airshow in 2026.
