Types of helicopters
A helicopter hovering over your neighborhood is usually a medical, police, news or utility flight. Most are light single- or twin-engine helicopters.
The tail is the best clue: whether it has a rotor, a fan hidden inside it, or nothing visible at all.
How to tell them apart
No tail rotor, a fan built into the tail instead
An Airbus helicopter with a Fenestron, like the H135 or newer H145.
A tiny bubble cockpit with two or four seats
A Robinson R22 (two seats) or R44 (four).
A big, sleek helicopter with retractable wheels
A Leonardo AW139 or Sikorsky S-92, often offshore or VIP work.
