Small planes
The little planes buzzing around on a nice weekend are general aviation: flight students, private pilots, banner towers, crop dusters and aerobatic pilots. There are far more of them than airliners.
Most of them can be narrowed down from the ground with two questions: where is the wing, and where is the tail?
How to tell them apart
Wing on top of the cabin
Usually a Cessna (152, 172, 182, 206).
Wing under the cabin
A Piper Cherokee or Archer, Cirrus, Diamond, Mooney or Beechcraft.
A T-tail on a small low-wing plane
Often a Diamond DA40 or DA42, or a Piper Arrow IV or Tomahawk.
A biplane doing loops and rolls
Probably a Pitts Special.
A single-seater flying very low over fields
An agricultural plane like the Air Tractor.
